Bringing Community to Life: The Story Behind MAAT’s New Mural Project

At the heart of the MAAT Youth and Innovation Centre, a radiant new mural now breathes life into our walls—an explosion of color, culture, and collective spirit. More than just art, this mural is a testament to the strength, creativity, and resilience of Scarborough youth. It captures the essence of what the Centre stands for: a vibrant, energizing, and inclusive space where young voices are not only heard but celebrated.

Guided by the vision of renowned artist and educator Amir Akbari and brought to life by our passionate team of emerging youth artists and Skilled4Sucess staff, this project is a bold declaration of unity, heritage, and hope for the future.

The vibrant piece is a clear reflection of the strength and resilience of the youth who helped bring it to life. Supporting Amir in this project were artists Sara Said, Kenisha Skinner, Bella Akbari, and Vithunan Sivakumar.

The mural’s development allowed our team to ensure it was a reflection of our S4S program staff, Centre staff, and community stakeholders. Through several design mockups, and a careful process, two concepts were shortlisted before the final vision was brought to life.

Symbolism Behind the Mural

At the heart of the mural stands the Tree of Life, symbolizing deep-rooted connections to ancestry. Flowing through the composition is a majestic waterfall, representing the natural world and its vital role in our lives. On one side, an Ibis bird, a symbol of prosperity, watches over the scene, while the Toronto skyline rises from the landscape, reflecting the boundless opportunities available to the city’s youth. Along the bottom, Adinkra symbols—traditional African emblems—infuse the mural with messages of heritage, wisdom, and unity.

The mural embodies themes of community, resilience, heritage, and growth. Its vibrant colors and nature-inspired imagery create a sense of togetherness while celebrating cultural roots and aspirations. Every element of the mural tells a story, each symbol carries meaning, and the overall composition serves as a visual reminder of the strength found in shared experiences.

Beyond its aesthetic, the mural serves a deeper purpose—to create a space that is vibrant, energizing, and inviting. Designed to resonate with the youth who frequent the center, it offers a moment of reflection, a spark of inspiration, and a reminder that they belong to something greater.

As visitors step into the space, they are encouraged to engage with the mural’s colors, symbols, and imagery, immersing themselves in a narrative that is both deeply personal and universally relatable. It is a piece that doesn’t just decorate a wall—it tells a story, ignites dreams, and connects generations.

Through this project, Amir Akbari and our MAAT Centre emerging youth artists have not only beautified our environment but have also created a lasting impact, proving that when art and community come together, powerful, lasting change is possible.
